Suzete Martins was born in Brazil in 1956. Her interest in art came at an early age and has developed throughout her life as she has studied arts with different painters. Suzete began her formal training as a student of Maricelda Bellini in 1967 and 1968 when she was introduced to the art of drawing with colored pencils and charcoal. After high school Suzete continued on to dental school, graduating in 1981 and opening her own dental office, during this time her passion for art continued. After finishing dental school she returned to her study of the arts. From 1983 to 1985 Suzete studied with Claudia Dal Canton learning the techniques of acrylic, oil, lithography, tempera and pastel. Studying with Francelino A. Rodrigues from 1992 to 1994 Suzete continued to practice her work in oil being introduced to the art of classical oil painting on canvas. In 2001 Suzete enrolled herself in Arquitec School of Art and Interior Design in Campinas, Brazil. In 2003, with Ulisses de Andrade, Suzete studied many different contemporary art techniques such as collage and acrylic, collage and paper, abstract art, etc. Suzete lived most of her life in Brazil but in 2005 she moved to Buffalo, New York where she now resides. Suzete is a very eclectic artist who experiments with different techniques and uses a wide range of materials to create her artwork. Suzete’s belief is that art is subjective; her main purpose when creating art is to invoke feeling and emotion in the observer. She likes to leave interpretation up to the observer, which is why she prefers not to name her paintings because she does not want to bias their feelings. When she does name her paintings, Suzete first shows her artwork to friends and family, watches their reaction and listens to the feelings it has summoned in them and uses this to choose a name for the piece.
